SMILE (2024)
2024
ceramic, mason stain, underglaze, glaze, gold luster, acrylic17 x 6 x 10 inches
SMILE is inspired by the signage “SMILE, you’re on camera, ” often seen at gas stations or near surveillance cameras. The altered message “SMILE, You’re in Patriarchy” is satire and refers to women being told to “Smile,” when apprearing neutral or not smiling. The bloated blue glove is adorned with nails and a ring. The pressure built in the glove can be interpretted as stress from maintaining the conventional roles of a woman. The yellow stool acts as a pedestal but is a signifier of labor and class.
